Moulin Rouge! The Musical strikes casting gold with Aaron Tveit and JoJo

The Tony Award-winning musical, based on Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film, premiered in 2018. Just like its predecessor, the musical became a fan-favorite thanks to its endless bops and gorgeous set and costume designs. The cast lineup has changed now and then, but the magic has always stayed at the forefront. This time around, however, the musical has managed to bring back two iconic stars who fans will most definitely flock to watch: Aaron Tveit and Joanna "JoJo" Levesque.

Star-crossed lovers

Moulin Rouge follows the story of a young composer named Christian who, on his travels through the 20th Century Montmartre Quarter of Paris, falls in love with a cabaret performer and the star of the Moulin Rouge, Satine. Alas, their love is restricted to late-night rendezvous as the club's manager has promised to hand her over to a Duke in exchange for funding.

A tale of passion unwinds over the course of a musical full of popular songs and extravagantly produced sets culminating in a whirlwind of a final act that must be seen to truly be experienced.

A match made in theatrical heaven

As wonderful as every version of the lead characters has been, there's something uniquely apt about the latest casting choices. Aaron Tveit originated the role of Christian in 2018 in Boston before transferring it to Broadway, playing the character on and off until 2023, and earning himself a Tony for his work.

Joanna Levesque, more popularly known by her stage name JoJo, hit the world of entertainment with a bang when her debut self-titled album dropped in 2004. She became the youngest-ever solo artist to have a debut No. 1 single in the U.S. thanks to her smash-hit "Leave (Get Out)." More recently, she debuted on Broadway as the Moulin Rouge! The Musical's leading lady Satine in 2023, starring opposite Derek Klena as Christian. Despite Tveit and Jojo' taking on the leading roles in the musical at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and their respective stints overlapping, they only ever shared one electrifying night on stage together.

Needless to say, getting to see them together again - the original Broadway version of Christian and one of the most critically acclaimed singers of the modern era - is a dream come true for fans who missed their singular performance before. Speaking about the casting news, JoJo shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, "Returning as Satine to @MoulinRougeBway for a brief but titillating rendezvous starting July 23rd. Thrilled to be with the best company imaginable and to play opposite the one and only @AaronTveit."
