Tony Awards 2024: Make way for the winners!

Jenifer

The 2024 Tony Awards delivered glitz, glam, stellar performances, and some good old-school Broadway magic. But most importantly, it gave us a fresh list of winners to celebrate, including a few wonderful surprises and new records to jot down in the theater history books.

Let's pull up our sleeves and roll out the carpet: here come the Tony Awards 2024 winners!

"It's our time, breathe it in: worlds to change and worlds to win."

Musicals have taken center stage this year, so it should come as no surprise that these were some of the most anticipated awards of the season.

The Outsiders took home the prestigious award for Best Musical. Set in 1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma, the musical follows 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis as he navigates the conflict between rival gangs: the working-class Greasers and the upper-middle-class Socials, or "Socs" for short.

Jonathan Groff bagged the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his work on Merrily We Roll Along. His co-star Daniel Radcliffe picked up the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical, with the musical also winning in the Best Revival of a Musical category. Radcliffe, widely known for his work in film and television, has earned quite a reputation for selecting more off-beat roles since his work in the Harry Potter franchise. Yet, despite his ability to draw crowds, this stands as the actor's first major win for his acting, a much-welcome award for fans and critics.

Hell's Kitchen also saw a few wins, with Maleah Joi Moon taking home the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical award and Kecia Lewis picking up one for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical.

Shaina Taub's work on Suffs earned her the Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre award. Taub also won Best Book of a Musical for Suffs, while Merrily We Roll Along's Jonathan Tunick won Best Orchestrations. Both productions earned praise for their music while being contentious as far as their premises were concerned. Suffs took on women's suffrage with modern themes layered in, while Merrily We Roll Along tracked an often turbulent relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and two of his two lifelong friends, writer Mary and lyricist and playwright Charley.

The Great Gatsby, an eternal classic both on and off stage, took home Best Costume Design of a Musical for Linda Cho. Set in the roaring 20s, this gorgeous production sweeps you up as it travels back in time, bringing as much toe-tapping goodness as it does dramatic flair. And Cho's designs stand at the heart of it all.

Best Sound Design of a Musical went to The Outsider's Cody Spencer, and Best Direction of a Musical went to The Outsider's Danya Taymor. The production's Brian MacDevitt and Hana S. Kim also won Best Lighting Design of a Musical. Popular among fans and critics alike, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club took home the Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Tom Scutt.

Dance also managed to grab some of the spotlight, thanks in part to the stellar performances, but just as much during the presentations. Best Choreography went to Illinoise's Justin Peck.

All the district's a stage, but these are no mere players

The plays didn't stray too far behind this year, of course, with several riveting performances earning critical acclaim from all corners. Stereophonic earned the title of Best Play while Appropriate picked up the award for Best Revival of a Play. Lead Sarah Paulson also received the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her work in the production. Jeremy Strong took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his work in An Enemy of the People.

Kara Young won Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for her work in Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch, while Stereophonic's Will Brill went home with the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play.

The Best Direction of a Play went to Stereophonic's Daniel Aukin. The play also won Best Sound Design of a Play for Ryan Rumery and Best Scenic Design of a Play for David Zinn. Appropriate's Jane Cox won Best Lighting Design of a Play.

The wonderfully comedic Jaja's African Hair Braiding has won hearts and is now a Tony winner, taking home Best Costume Design of a Play for Dede Ayite. Set in Harlem and centered on Jaja's hair braiding shop, the play follows the ins and outs of this bustling business and the West African ladies who frequent it.

Something old, something new

Stereophonic won big with five Tony Awards, with Merrily We Roll Along and The Outsiders tying with four each. Appropriate also made a splash, taking home three Tonys, and Hell's Kitchen tied with Suffs, with both productions winning two Tonys each. They enter the ever-growing list of acclaimed and awarded shows, cementing their places in Broadway history. Regardless of the final tallies, however, everyone's a winner in our book.
