The plot revolves around three central characters: Floria Tosca, Rome’s celebrated diva; her lover, Mario Cavaradossi, a painter and republican; and the corrupt Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia. Scarpia has long desired Tosca and, upon suspecting Cavaradossi of aiding an escaped political prisoner, sees an opportunity to achieve both his desires. He plans to force Tosca to reveal the prisoner’s location and Cavaradossi’s involvement, while also pursuing her for himself. When Cavaradossi is apprehended, Scarpia presents Tosca with a nightmarish ultimatum: surrender to him or watch her lover be executed.
